Practitioner

Tadashi Endo studied theatre direction in Vienna before embarking on a tour of Europe, giving solo performances accompanied by jazz musicians. Between 1980 and 1986 he worked in Northeim as head of a theatre program in the city. Endo met Kazuo Ohno for the first time in 1989, and has since been deeply influenced by Ohno.

In 1992, Endo founded the Butoh-Center MAMU and the Butoh-Festivals MAMU in Germany, of which he is now director. He continues to tour across Europe, the USA and Japan, and teaches butoh dance and philosophy to students from around the world. One of Endo’s most notable recent works is his interpretation of Georg Friedrich Händel's opera Admeto, which was directed by Doris Dörrie and performed at the Edinburgh International Festival in 2009.
