Kelly Hunter initiated Touchstone Shakespeare Theatre in 2002, offering Shakespeare to young people with limited access to the Arts, and creating and leading programmes of work in Primary Schools, Secondary Schools, and Special Schools.

Hunter has been an actress for over thirty years and has worked with notable figures such as Harold Prince, Sir Peter Hall, Jerome Savary and Sir Trevor Nunn, for whom she played Lola in The Blue Angel at the RSC in Stratford and in the West End – receiving a Laurence Olivier nomination for her performance. For English Touring Theatre Kelly has played Mrs Alving in Ghosts, Nora in The Dolls House and Rosalind in As You Like It, for which she received a TMA Best Actress award.  For the RSC she has played Constance in Gregory Doran’s King John and Goneril and Hermione in David Farr's productions of King Lear and The Winter’s Tale. She acted naked at the Gate Theatre in Giuseppe Manfridi's Cuckoos, directed by Sir Peter Hall, and has toured the world playing The Mother in Vesturport’s production of Metamorphosis.

Hunter’s work using Shakespeare as a therapeutic means of helping children with autism is being researched by Ohio State University’s Nisonger Centre: A University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.

Using Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a starting point, Hunter and her team worked with children with autism creating games and exercises, which develop their confidence and creativity.

Nicola Shaughnessy is a Professor of Performance at the University of Kent, where she teaches contemporary performance and applied theatre, and recently led the AHRC-funded project ‘Imagining Autism’.
