A theatre show in the public domain; part voyeuristic meditation, part urban thriller. small metal objects unfolds amidst the high volume pedestrian traffic of a public space. With individual sets of headphones, the audience is wired into an intensely personal drama being played out somewhere in the crowd. Gary and Steve are the kind of men who normally escape notice. But here they play an inadvertent but pivotal role in the night of two ambitious executives they’ve arranged to meet for a transaction. As the intimacy of their situation develops, small metal objects emerges as a sly and luminous depiction of everyday issues most take for granted. small metal objects is a reference to coins / currency / money. It references the main thematic concern of the show, which is the relationship between economics and human value. The name of the show came from a conversation with the ensemble. We started off talking together about the relationship between economics and human value. Economics is, we find, quite a difficult topic, so we started talking about money, about what makes you a good person. The story emerged in large part from Devisor Sonia Teuben. She wanted to play a highly successful person. To her, success is about friendships and relationships. (She also wanted to play a man, which she thinks defines success in some ways.) Much of the philosophy espoused by Gary, the character that Sonia created, reflects Sonia’s ideas about what it means to be successful in the world, what is meaningful in the world. Once the character of Gary had been formed, we started introducing other characters that relate to him. The script developed from there.
