Yoga postures (Asanas) seen in the videos with their Sanskrit
names.
The first workshop approach focuses on four body-mind dialogues inherent in the safe practice of the yoga postures and proposes correspondences between these and processes relevant to first steps in actor training.
The second workshop approach explores ways in which yoga can be combined with movement improvisation activities in order to train the student actor’s kinetic and spatial sensibility, and proposes that such combinations can facilitate both areas.
The third workshop approach focuses on the lying down yoga posture
Savasana and proposes that the channels within the posture between
‘outside’ and ‘inside’ offer effective psychophysical tools which can help
student actors to engage with creating their own performance imagery.
The fourth workshop approach focuses on and proposes the use of specific yoga postures to enhance and supplement aspects of vocal training.
The fifth workshop approach explores the use of yoga as a resource for working on a piece of post-dramatic text and proposes that practice in the yoga postures offers the student actor a pathway towards embodiment of such a text.
The sixth workshop approach proposes a hybrid sequence of yoga postures, and
other movements, as a tool to explore diverse ways of physicalising emotional
subtexts.
Yoga and Actor Training offers a practical introduction to, as well as a
discursive overview of, the ways yoga practice can be used in contemporary actor
training. Approaches explored in this series of audio-visually recorded
workshops with student actors lay down some of the foundational correspondences
in the relationship between yoga and actor training. Together with contextual
essays, the videos are designed to support and encourage further collaboration
between the two disciplines.
